André Borrmann studied Civil Engineering at the Bauhaus University Weimar and received his doctorate in the field of Construction informatics from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2007. Since 2011, he has been heading the Chair of Computational Modeling and Simulation at TUM, which was renamed in 2025 to Chair of Computing in Civil and Building Engineering. Since 2025, André Borrmann is Director of the TUM Georg Nemetschek Institute - AI for the Built World. In addition, he has been spokesperson for the Leonhard Obermeyer Center of Digital Methods for the Built Environment since 2013.
Prof. Borrmann has coedited four books, is the coauthor of more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and has received several international awards for his research work. His main research field is the application of Artificial Intelligence in Civil and Building Engineering covering the entire lifecylce of built facilities (design, construction and operation), ranging from generative AI over point-cloud and image processing for digital twinning to maintenance prediction. In addition, he is driving the technological advancement of Building Information Modeling (BIM) covering all its facets from geometry processing over data management to semantic reasoning.
Besides his research activities, Prof. Borrmann is also actively pushing forward BIM adoption in practice. He has coauthored the BIM roadmap of the German Ministry of Transport released in 2015, was intensively involved in the BIM4INFRA2020 project, and has been active in the national BIM competence center "BIM-Deutschland" since 2019. He is a member of the DIN Technical Council "Building Information Modeling" and has contributed extensively to the VDI guideline series 2552. In addition, he is intensively engaged in the activities of buildingSMART International, where he is primarily involved in projects extending the IFC standard for the infrastructure sector. From 2016 to 2021, he acted as the speaker of the German Association for Computing in Civil Engineering.
