Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her enthusiasm during her visit to Neuperlach on 13 September: “We had this great idea of the New European Bauhaus - but this idea can only work if it is filled with life from below. It is overwhelming for me to see that this is happening.” Von der Leyen was welcomed by Verena Dietl, 3rd Mayor of Munich, who is proud of the European-funded project: “You can see that the heart of the EU beats in the municipalities too.” Since October 2022, the lighthouse project “NEBourhoods” has been creating sustainable, circular neighborhoods in the Munich district of Neuperlach. The project brings together the population, administration, business, and science representatives to develop sustainable and resource-saving solutions in the spirit of the New European Bauhaus. It will serve as a model throughout Europe. In the “Circular Neuperlach” sub-project, the Chair of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Construction investigates how office complexes that have fallen out of use can contribute to regenerative, climate-friendly, and community-oriented urban development through transformative approaches. The focus is on extending the useful life of buildings, conversion, and multiple uses through innovative, circular strategies.
