GAB: Chemical reservoir management

The hydrochemistry of deep aquifers is important for technical safety and economic efficiency. Scalings and corrosion are widespread. On the other hand, the hydrochemical characteristics of deep aquifers offer an integrated view on the flow paths and their development during operation.

In this project, which is part of the Geothermal-Alliance Bavaria, subproject "long-term. Ensuring sustainable thermal water production" the physical and hydrochemical measured values of characteristic plants are processed and examined for multivariate changes in order to discriminate and quantify natural and technically induced gradients. The necessary parameters for hydrogeochemical monitoring are to be generated synthetically via a calibrated hydrogeochemical model with higher temporal resolution. In addition, short-term sampling will be carried out to collect closely resolved hydrochemical data at the boreholes. All collected data are analysed with multivariate statistical methods to define virtual sensors that are able to describe the condition in the reservoir, even during different operating phases, and to replace costly physical sensors in the reservoir that are technically difficult or impossible to implement. The virtual monitoring incorporates data from the accompanying reservoir simulation and, if necessary, takes into account the results from the analogue study. For a holistic prognosis of the development of the reservoir and for successful reservoir management, the processes in the reservoir are mapped in a hydraulically, thermally, mechanically and chemically coupled model based on the results from the hydraulic-thermal model, the geomechanical model and a fully coupled model. In addition, for the determination of the reactive surface area, the quantification of the solution kinetics under reservoir conditions and the potential for hydrogeochemically induced mechanical changes are carried out in collaboration with WP 3. on core material. Using the acquired physical and virtual sensors and the THMC models, an adapted parameter set for quasi-continuous monitoring will be developed, which should contribute to the optimisation of production safety and sustainable management.
