Lernziele
The students at the end of the module will be able to understand and analyze:
• the fundamental concepts for the sustainable use of urban waters,
• the fundamental concepts of urban flood modeling,
• the need and usefulness of different measures in urban hydrology
• the need and usefulness of different model types in urban flood modeling
Finally, the students are able to discuss the range of applicability as well as the advantages and disadvantages of different measures and models for different contexts, namely, planning of blue-green infrastructure, flood risk and flood management, and for urban development planning (densification of urban areas).

Beschreibung
Introduction: Overview of the most important urban hydrological and hydraulic processes and concepts.
Urban Hydrology:
All the following topics are exemplified at Maxvorstadt!
T1 Concepts for the Sustainable Use of Urban Waters
T2 Blue-green infrastructure - resources and needs
T3 Rainwater/stormwater harvesting
T4 Low Impact Development (LID)
T5 Green infrastructure and cooling effect
Urban Flood Modeling
All the following topics are exemplified in the flash flood case study Simbach a. Inn!
T6 Challenges in urban flood modeling, in relation to flood management and flood risk assessment.
T7. Sewer drainage model I - SWMM model setup (computational work).
T8. Sewer drainage model II - analysis of results (computational work).
Introduction to overland flood models in urban areas.
T9. Overland flow model I – TELEMAC2D (or Hydro_AS) model setup (computational work).
T10. Overland flow model II – analysis of results (computational work).
Introduction to dual drainage models.
T11. Unidirectional Dual drainage flow model I - TELEMAC2D(or Hydro_AS) / SWMM (computational work).
T12. Unidirectional Dual drainage flow model II - analysis of results (computational work).

Lehr- und Lernmethoden
Lecture with integrated computational exercises. 3 computer exercises (each split in two parts). The exercises can be done in groups. Students submit a report (10–15 pages) summarizing their results. Students will receive feedback during the lectures on their reports. Students will prepare and present their reports during the lecture period.
Studien-, Prüfungsleistung
At the end of the module, students submit a report (10-15 pages) with corresponding presentation (circa 15 min). The report is a written record and summary of the two main exercises followed during the module, covering urban drought and flood mitigation measurements (assignement 1), and the setup, application and analysis of the results from three different urban flood models (sewer network model, overland flow model and dual drainage flow model = assignment 2). The report will verify that the students understood the basic concepts of urban hydrology and flood modeling in urban areas and that they were able to apply those concepts for the solution of problems within a given period of time. The students will work in groups of maximum of five. The presentation is also done in groups. The presentation will verify if the students are able to present their results in a coherent manner, discuss and answer questions related to urban hydrology and urban flood modelling.
