Guest lecture: How to Drive a Sustainable Path for Metal 3D Printing in AEC?

Alper Kanyilmaz is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Built Environment and Civil Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy. He will answer the question of how to take a sustainable path for 3D metal printing in the AEC sector.

On July 10 at 1 pm, Alper Kanyilmaz will present his latest research findings. You are cordially invited to the lecture! There will also be plenty of time to ask questions and engage in conversation. Please register briefly if you wish to attend in person; participation via Zoom is also possible.

Abstract of the lecture

Title: How to Drive a Sustainable Path for Metal 3D Printing in AEC?
The construction of new structures plays a crucial role in reducing global CO2 emissions and energy consumption. Metal 3D Printing offers the potential to create parts with tailored properties that meet specific performance requirements while minimizing waste and material usage. Traditionally, metal 3D printing research has focused primarily on processing studies, often without a comprehensive integration of sustainability metrics. This talk aims to explore how to integrate life cycle cost (LCC) and environmental impact (LCA) analyses into metal 3D printing research and enhance the sustainability of manufacturing large metal parts in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. EU and Germany’s national missions regarding “the digital transition” and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of AEC industry will be in the center of discussions. The talk will be enriched by recent findings from the EU-funded ConstructAdd project, which is working towards mainstream application of metal 3D printing in AEC and automotive industries.

Biography of the speaker

Alper Kanyilmaz is an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering of Politecnico di Milano in Italy. He applies data-driven approaches, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing techniques to drive a digitalized and sustainable transition in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector towards a life-cycle driven building structures. His recent works include “How does conceptual design impact the cost and carbon footprint of structures? and “A genetic algorithm tool for conceptual structural design with cost and embodied carbon optimization”, and "Role of metal 3D printing to increase quality and resource-efficiency in the construction sector". He is an Expert Advisor for the European Commission Technical group “Steel Applications for New Markets” (Mandate 2023-2028), and project monitoring expert for European Commission, B.1 – Future Low Emission Industries. He is the coordinator of EU-funded research projects ConstructAdd and LASTTS. He transfers his research experience to the civil engineering and architecture students in terms of teaching, MSc and PhD thesis supervision.
