- Design and application of hybrid and advanced systems for water treatment for various direct and indirect reuse purposes, drinking water purification and advanced wastewater treatment
- Management of the anthropogenic water cycle in view of an accelerating climate change
- Advanced water treatment in water and wastewater treatment systems: ad-/sorption, membrane filtration, oxidation including advanced oxidation processes, disinfection, natural treatment systems
- Adsorption: process design and scale-up/-down, fundamental investigation of competitive adsorption in aqueous media, novel sorbent regeneration methods
- Membrane filtration: microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, fouling mitigation and membrane cleaning
- Process modeling and employment of surrogate parameters for process control
- Removal of trace organic compounds, notably (very) persistent and (very) mobile (PMT/vPvM) substances including PFAS, and elimination/inactivation of microorganisms
- Contribution to the Technical Committee „Persistent-Mobile-Toxic (PMT) Substances“, Water Chemistry Society, German Chemistry Society (GDCh)
