Research
Powerful intermodal transport infrastructures are the "veins" of modern societies. Optimization in terms of sustainable performance (economical, ecological and sociological) is challenging for engineers and scientists who will obtain the necessary technical and scientific competence by the Chair and Institute of road, railway and airfield construction. Teaching (including training and know-how transfer), research, and applied research are linked. Research in the field of road and railway construction requires flexibility models and simulation tools by applying theoretical models, verified by laboratory and in-situ investigations.
For more than fifty years the Lab is acting in research of road, railway and airfield construction together with international costumers, public authorities, businesses and donations. The institute was deeply involved in the development of the continuously welded rail (CWR) techniques, pre-stressed concrete sleepers and ballastless track systems as well as the jointed plain concrete pavement design (JPCP).
Results are documented in more than 3000 research-reports.
Besides the developments of testing methodologies and measurement technologies, support of the building authorities and industry is provided. In following, examples of actual research topics, the available man power and relevant technical equipments are shown.
In addition, the Institute of Road, Railway and Airfield Construction is a testing laboratory accredited by DAkkS according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. The accreditation is only valid for the scope of accreditation listed in the document attachment D-PL-14063-08-00. A list of the flexible scope of accreditation can be found here.
