DanubeSediment_Q2

DanubeSediment_Q2 is funded by the Danube Region Programme (co-funded by the EU) and aims to improve the management of sediment quantity and quality in the Danube River Basin to achieve environmental objectives. The main output is the first Integrated Sediment Management Plan (ISMP) for the Danube River Basin. The project will recommend concrete solutions and upscaling options to be taken up by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) in the next Danube River Basin Management Plan as well as Flood Risk Management Plan. To attain this goal for the first time, it is crucial to enhance and expand a combined monitoring network for sediment quantity and as well as quality. Additionally, two essential outputs must be developed:

(i) A novel hydromorphological assessment method.

(ii) A sediment risk assessment method.

It is of central importance to develop sediment management measures in an innovative co-design process. For this reason, stakeholders are heavily involved in the discussion from the start, ensuring that their requirements are directly incorporated into the project. Furthermore, monitoring and assessment are conducted in nine case study sites to develop new measures to address site specific problems. These measures on case study sites will then be tested on computer based numerical models as well as on physical model tests. Additionally, new methodologies for evaluating hydromorphology and assessing the risks associated with disturbances in sediment balance will also be developed.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  1. Improve sediment monitoring, data management and evaluation methods in the Danube River Basin
  2. Feasibility of practical solutions to address sediment alteration being co-created with stakeholders
  3. Develop transboundary Integrated Sediment Management Plan ISMP for the Danube River Basin

The DanubeSediment_Q2 consortium consists of members from 14 different countries of the Danube River Basin. It encompasses governmental institutions, NGOs, companies, research organizations, national parks, and environmental agencies, offering a broad spectrum of professional expertise spanning from engineering to ecology. Chair of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering, TUM leads the package of specific objective 2.3 : Simulation of sediment management strategies at case study sites. In this objective, the project partners will design and simulate several (at least two) sediment management solutions at the different case study sites to evaluate the suitability of the measures improving sediment alteration.  For the modelling, state-of-the art techniques, such as numerical models and/or large-scale physical models, will be applied.
