Time-variant Reliability Analysis:
Old challenges and new solutions
A JCSS workshop hosted by TUM
Monday 2. December 2024 - Tuesday 3. December 2024
Workshop program: Download the pdf of the workshop program.
Registration: Attendance at the tutorial and workshop is free of charge, but registration is required until November 15. Please fill in the registration form and send it to Sabine Meyer, sabine.meyer(at)tum.de for registration. Download the registration form.
Objective: This workshop aims at stimulating the research on time-variant reliability analysis and its application to engineering practice. Leading researchers in the field present the current state-of-the-art and provide input on the directions that future research can take. The joint conclusions of the workshop should identify future research directions and initiate research initiatives and collaborations.
Format: Prior to the workshop, there will be a tutorial on time-variant reliability in the morning of 2.12.2024. The workshop starts on the same day at 1pm and will comprise of invited contributions from experts and discussions among all participants. Each expert will be allocated 30 minutes for his/her presentation, including Q&A.
Abstract for tutorial: Reliability assessment of a structure is essential to evaluate its safety level, so as to manage its ability of withstanding future extreme events within the service life. The fundamental characteristic of a time-dependent reliability problem is the presence of time-variant parameters in the analysis. This comes about because, often, both the structural resistance and the external loads change with time. The tutorial will start with a motivation of time-dependent reliability assessment. Subsequently, solution techniques for different resistance and load models will be discussed. In particular, discrete and continuous load processes will be considered, and a selection of analytical and simulation-based methods for these cases will be presented.
