The Chair of Hydrogeology has recently published a paper in Biogeosciences exploring the the link between the anaerobic methane oxidation with nitrate and the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) in a stratified lake. The occurrence of the two coupled biogeochemical pathways in aquatic environments provides an opportunity for simultaneous nitrogen removal and methane emissions mitigation. Both processes have important implications for the global carbon and nitrogen cycles and may show a high potential for sustainable waste water treatment. https://bg.copernicus.org/articles/17/5149/2020/
