It is a milestone on the way to a sustainable energy supply using deep geothermal energy: a broad alliance of players in the city and district, lead by TUM are working together to further advance the utilisation of deep geothermal energy in the region. The aim is to develop underground thermal energy quickly through a large number of new projects, but at the same time to do so sustainably on the basis of optimised joint use of the thermal water reservoir in the greater Munich area. A large-scale seismic measurement campaign, which is to be carried out as part of the research project, forms a central basis for this. The funding decision from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection has now been received. The research project GIGA M can now officially begin, will run for four years and paves the way for the regional transition to a climate-neutral, secure and affordable heat supply.
