A new article from Shiva Pudasaini (University of Bonn) and Michael Krautblatter (TUM) is now available online. In it, they introduce a new two-phase model that is capable of performing dynamic strength weakening due to internal fluidization and basal lubrication. This model is particularly relevant for mixed rock-ice avalanches where the solid ice component can fluidize during the avalanche event and greatly change the dynamics of the flow. They find this change is essential to reproduce the travel distance and morphology of some former rock-ice avalanches. The article is available for download either from the Journal of Geophysical Research, or Michael's ResearchGate profile.
