Dr. Michael Angelopoulos joined the Technical University of Munich in March 2024 with a DFG Eigene Stelle project entitled “Saline Permafrost in Arctic Coastal Environments (SPACE).” Michael is extremely interested in the effects of salt transport on the state and stability of permafrost. During my DFG, Michael aspires to broaden my research scope to encompass Mars-analogue studies in the Arctic. Before joining TUM, Michael spent 7 years at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Potsdam, Germany, primarily researching subsea and sub-lagoon permafrost using geophysical methods and thermal models. At AWI, Michael also took part in the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition, spending 4 months on the Polarstern icebreaker in the Central Arctic Ocean. Prior to AWI, Michael worked for 4 years as a consultant for Golder Associates in Canada, often participating in projects related to mining infrastructure in permafrost regions. Michael hold a PhD from the University of Potsdam (Potsdam, Germany) and an MSc and BSc from McGill University (Montreal, Canada).
