Charles Paull (MBARI) and Michael Angelopoulos collaborated on a News & Views article for Nature Geoscience, following their invitation to write a piece about the discovery of subsea permafrost in the Canadian subarctic off the coast of Labrador. Emerging evidence indicates that groundwater flow significantly impacts the distribution and characteristics of subsea permafrost. To place the study by Normandeau et al. (2024) in a larger context, they discuss similar processes of subsea permafrost formation and collapse occurring along the continental shelf edge in the Canadian Arctic.
